Calabria - Isola Capo Rizzuto
CHOOSE ACCOMMODATION SHOPPING SUGGESTIONS EXCURSIONS
Isola Capo Rizzuto stands on a terraced layout looking over the Jonion sea, and has legendary origins. It is still a mystery why the town was abandoned by its inhabitants and moved inland to live near a Monastery of Benedictine monks.
The name Isola (Island) dates back many years when the bishop had power over all the local islands that over the years have united to form Terra Ferma or mainland.
Along the coast close to Isola Capo Rizzuto you can find Le Castella, that also has a history that mixes with legend.
Hannibal erected his encampment here and constructed a look out tower, from which he could signal to his ships and defend his territory, until the assault of Barbarossa in 1536.
